German authorities suspect left-wing extremists are behind an arson attack on the electricity supply in Reutlingen, Baden-Württemberg on the night of Monday, June 8th.

It appears that the as-yet unknown arsonists caused a widespread power outage. According to the Stuttgart Public Prosecutor’s Office, indications of likely arson at the electricity substation effected include the suspected use of accelerants, multiple points of origin for fires, and a nearby fence being bent open.

Monday’s fire broke out around 1:45 a.m., cutting off several districts and nearby communities from the power supply. These included Betzingen, Ohmenhausen, Wannweil, and Kirchentellinsfurt, affecting some 7,600 households.

Recently, previous arson attacks on energy infrastructure have been attributed to the Berlin-based Vulkangruppe, which has a similar modus operandi. In just the Berlin-Brandenburg region, to date the Office for the Protection of the Constitution has attributed 13 attacks on public infrastructure to so-called Volcano Groups.
