Berlin is exploring emergency energy measures, including the revival of mothballed coal facilities, as the conflict in Iran triggers a sharp rise in gas prices across Germany.

The German government is considering activating idle coal plants to mitigate rising energy costs resulting from the war in Iran, according to sources within Germany’s coalition government who spoke to Politico.

The move is intended to conserve natural gas, the price of which has soared since the initial attacks on Tehran in late February.

On Thursday, the German Bundestag passed a package of energy measures designed to curb rising prices. The package imposes limits on energy companies’ ability to hike rates, though doubts regarding its effectiveness were raised immediately.
