The city of Memmingen is in mourning following the discovery of 14-year-old Jermaine B., whose body was found in a dilapidated building after a massive weekend manhunt.

The case took a violent turn on May 4th, when the primary suspect—a 37-year-old rejected asylum seeker—was shot dead by police after attacking officers with a knife.

Government officials have since confirmed that the suspect, a stateless individual from the Palestinian West Bank, was legally required to leave Germany but had been granted a Duldung (tolerated stay) because he lacked a passport.

Despite two previous criminal convictions, the suspect remained in the country, reigniting a fierce national debate over the failure of deportation mechanisms for undocumented high-risk migrants—and the safety of German youth.
