The University of Leipzig has increased security measures on its Augustusplatz campus following several reported incidents in women’s toilets, including assaults and harassment cases in April.
According to police, at least two cases are under investigation. On April 7th, an unknown individual reportedly photographed a woman while she was naked in a toilet in the Paulinum building before fleeing the scene. A day later, a 22-year-old student was attacked in a toilet area at the Humanities Center. A 26-year-old Lebanese man was identified as a suspect in that case.
Additional incidents reported around April 14th included verbal and physical confrontations in women’s toilets and nearby areas, though some of these were not initially known to police.
In response, the university has introduced increased security presence, including checks of women’s toilets by security personnel and awareness campaigns across campus. Previous cases of harassment had also been reported in 2022, prompting earlier security reviews and the establishment of a university commission addressing discrimination and violence.
The developments come amid broader concerns about crime in Leipzig. Authorities have reported a rise in offences involving minors, including a group of juveniles linked to numerous incidents across the city. According to police, the group consists of up to 14 members, some of migrant background, and has been associated with more than 150 offences since autumn 2025, ranging from theft to violent attacks.
The twins leading the group are from South Sudan and hold German citizenship, while other members have Chechen roots.
