Greenpeace report: France, Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands have paid more for Russian LNG than they have given in aid to Ukraine

Four EU member states (France, Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands) have spent more money on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) than they have provided in financial support to Ukraine – according to a new Greenpeace report published on Tuesday (30 September).

These four member states, which import the most Russian LNG in the EU, spent a total of €34.3 billion on it between 2022 and June 2025, while their total support to Ukraine amounted to €21.2 billion.

Greenpeace noted that in the first half of 2025 the EU imported a total of 12.8 billion cubic metres of Russian LNG, representing a 67 percent increase compared with the first half of 2021.
