A Hamas official claimed that his group needs more time to review U.S. president Donald Trump’s plan for Gaza, which is already supported by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump gave Hamas a “three or four days” ultimatum to accept the proposal which calls for a ceasefire, the release of hostages within 72 hours, Hamas’s disarmament, and a gradual Israeli withdrawal, followed by a transitional authority led by Trump (expected to involve former British PM Tony Blair).
Hamas has raised concerns about clauses on disarmament and the expulsion of its terrorists from Gaza, as well as the need for guarantees on a full Israeli withdrawal and protection against assassination attempts (what Trump has referred to as ‘safe passage’). Two factions within Hamas reportedly differ on what to accept: one favors unconditionally approving the plan to secure a ceasefire, while the other wants conditional approval with amendments.
