Hungary said on Thursday, August 21, that it is ready to host peace talks for Ukraine.
Budapest has been floated as one of the locations to host the U.S.-led bid to end the war. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said Budapest was ready to host any peace talks.
“We will provide the proper, fair, and safe conditions for such peace talks,” he told a show streamed on social media. “I don’t know of any European politician today, apart from Viktor Orbán, who can speak equally with (U.S. President) Donald Trump and (Russian President) Vladimir Putin,” he added.
Szijjártó also clarified that it is untrue that President Trump pressured Viktor Orbán to support Ukraine’s EU membership. Hungary does not support Ukraine joining the EU for now, arguing that Ukraine’s current situation could destabilize the entire bloc.
