The Iranian military threatened attacks on any U.S. forces entering the Strait of Hormuz after President Donald Trump announced plans to escort ships through the waterway.

On Monday the Iranian military warned that U.S. forces would be targeted if they entered the Strait of Hormuz. The statement follows President Donald Trump’s announcement that Washington intends to escort ships through the strategic waterway.

Major General Ali Abdollahi of the Iranian military’s central command stated “We warn that any foreign armed force–especially the aggressive U.S. military–will be targeted and attacked should they intend to approach or enter the Strait of Hormuz.”

He reiterated Tehran’s stance that the security of the Strait of Hormuz remains under the control of the Iranian armed forces, adding that any safe passage must be coordinated with them under all circumstances.
