Israel killed a senior Hezbollah commander in a strike on Beirut on Wednesday, two sources told AFP, as fighting with the Iran-backed group intensifies.
Lebanon’s health ministry said the attack killed seven people.
A Lebanese security source and a Hezbollah source identified the commander as Youssef Hashem, who was responsible for the group’s military operations in Iraq. He was reportedly meeting inside a tent when the strike hit.
Israel’s military said Hashem led Hezbollah’s south Lebanon front.
The killing marks one of the highest-level targets eliminated since the war began. A source close to Hezbollah described Hashem as “the highest-ranking official to be targeted since the start of the war.”
Hezbollah also confirmed the death of another member, Mohammad Baqir al-Naboulsi, in the strike on the Jnah area of Beirut.
