The Israeli Foreign Minister accused Spain of “standing with Iran.” Gideon Sa’ar said the Spanish government—which he claimed had supported “all the tyrants of the world, as it did with Venezuela”—is now siding with Iran as well.
Sa’ar also criticized Spain’s stance on the war, claiming it is an outlier in Europe.
Madrid’s Foreign Minister Manuel Albares responded to this accusation in an interview on Monday:
That is absurd and ridiculous. Spain has a coherent foreign policy.
Previously on Saturday, February 28th Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he “rejected the unilateral military action by the U.S. and Israel” on Iran, claiming it
represents an escalation and contributes to a more uncertain and hostile international order.
Spain remains the only major European Union member state to openly criticise the U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iran, while other European governments have limited their condemnation to Iran’s attacks in the region.
