Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has declared that she will continue to advocate for tougher sanctions against Russia. Under Putin, she implies, it is similar to the former Soviet Union, where she learned
Freedom can only be truly understood when it has been taken away from you.
In a wide-ranging (but familiar) interview with Tagesspiegel, she promises to keep up the hard line on the Ukraine war, while assessing the work needed to reverse Brexit.
Shortly before leaving for the UK to work on a ‘reset’ of EU-UK relations, Kallas was lobbied by MEPs calling for a greater emphasis on Tibet in her engagement with China on human rights issues. This followed her talking down the potential of recent Russo-Ukrainian peace talks hosted by Turkey.
