Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv will seek further clarification from Washington regarding a Russian proposal for a temporary ceasefire on May 9th, coinciding with large-scale World War II commemorations in Moscow.
The proposal was made by Russian president Vladimir Putin as part of a call with his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump. According to the Kremlin, Trump expressed support for the idea.
Zelensky said he had instructed his team to gather more information about the scope and intent of the proposal:
We will clarify what exactly this is about—a few hours of security for a parade in Moscow, or something more.
Stressing that Ukraine’s position remains focused on achieving a lasting resolution to the war, he stated that
Our proposal is a long-term ceasefire, reliable and guaranteed security for people, and a lasting peace.
Zelensky added that Kyiv is ready to work toward this in any “dignified and effective format.”
The Kremlin’s proposal comes ahead of Russia’s annual May 9th Victory Day commemorations, which traditionally feature a military parade in Red Square. This year, Russian authorities said no military hardware would be included in the parade, citing security concerns amid ongoing Ukrainian drone strikes targeting Russian territory, including Moscow.
