Baltic state PM asks Poland to help assess weapons debris—NATO condemns airspace violations and pledges support.

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa asked her defense and interior ministries to examine with Poland suspected drone fragments found washed up in Latvia. Was it involved in a recent Russian incursion into Polish airspace?

Also facing inspection are possible fragments of the missile used to shoot it down, which were found in Poland.

On September 9–10, between 19 and 23 drones reportedly entered Poland’s airspace overnight. The tail section of a Gerbera drone was found near Varve which, according to Latvia’s Defence Minister Andris Spruds, contains no explosives.

According to the Latvian PM in a post on X, formerly Twitter:

Our priority has been to strengthen the eastern border, while it is clear that protecting the Baltic Sea coast by installing the necessary sensors is equally important.

Against the backdrop of an increasingly tense situation, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte declared:

We see drones violating our airspace. Whether it was intentional or not, it is unacceptable. The allies have expressed full solidarity with Poland. It is crucial to counter aggression and defend every member of the Alliance.

Earlier this week Polish authorities began investigating an apparent unintended strike on a civilian home, possibly from their own air defence systems.
