Emmanuel Macron is scheduled to chair a video conference on Friday, June 11th as part of France’s Group of Seven (G-7) presidency. An important participant will be China, which Macron will assert is “overproducing” (as distinct from alleged U.S. “overconsumption.”)
Also invited are Brazil, Egypt, India, Kenya, and South Korea, among others, alongside representatives of the European Union—with Europe accused of “under-investing”—and the International Monetary Fund. According to Macron’s office,
This conference shows a new willingness on the part of China, the United States and Europe over taking part in coordinated economic steps.
Sceptical voices expect the real business to be conducted next week at a leaders’ summit in Evian, eastern France. Macron’s critics also suggest he is reaching out on the international stage when things are literally burning up at home.
