Japan remains highly dependent on energy imports from the Middle East, which provides around 95% of its oil supply—prompting a search for stronger strategic partnerships.

French president Emmanuel Macron arrived in Tokyo on Tuesday, March 31st on official business. While his visit was initially aimed at strengthening cooperation in nuclear energy and space innovation, it will now largely focus on the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Macron is scheduled to hold talks with Japanese prime minister Sanae Takaichi on Wednesday. According to the Élysée Palace, the Middle East crisis will be at the centre of discussions, with both sides expected to explore possible ways to contribute to de-escalation and stability in the region.

Japan remains heavily dependent on energy imports from the Middle East, relying on the region for around 95% of its oil supply. Since the outbreak of the conflict, Tokyo has taken steps to mitigate the impact of rising energy prices.

The leaders are also expected to address broader economic concerns. Finance ministers from the G7 group, which includes both France and Japan, said earlier this week they stand ready to take necessary measures to ensure stability in global energy markets.

Wednesday’s meeting will mark the first full bilateral talks between Macron and Takaichi, although the two previously met on the sidelines of the G20 summit last November.

Macron and his wife Brigitte are due to have lunch with Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako on Thursday.
