La France Insoumise leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon confirmed he will join the race in 2027, warning of global conflict, climate upheaval, and looming economic crisis.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of France’s far-left La France Insoumise party (LFI), confirmed on Sunday that he would make another run for the presidency in 2027–his fourth bid for the top job.

Speaking to the French television channel TF1, the 74-year-old veteran politician called for a common front with Spain against “the war being waged by the U.S. and Israel in the Middle East.” He said “We are threatened by a widespread war, we are threatened by a spectacular change in the climate, and now we have an economic and social crisis approaching.”

While noting that the main political threat in next year’s presidential election appears to come from the right-wing Rassemblement National (RN), he added:

I think we’re going to beat them hands down.
