Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Saturday, February 28th, that he is closely following developments in Iran and remains in contact with Italy’s diplomatic missions in Tehran and Tel Aviv. The government aims to respond promptly to security risks in the region and ensure the protection of Italian nationals.
A crisis meeting was held this morning under the leadership of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, attended by ministers as well as intelligence and defence officials. The meeting reviewed the situation in the Middle East and possible Italian responses, while Rome reaffirmed its support for diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions as the United States and Israel launched a massive military operation against the Islamic regime of Tehran.
“At this particularly difficult moment, Italy reiterates its support for the Iranian civilian population, who are courageously demanding respect for their civil and political rights,” a statement from Palazzo Chigi said after the meeting.
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto confirmed that the Italian armed forces are not directly involved in the conflict but are closely monitoring developments. He stressed that the government’s primary goal is to ensure the safety of Italian citizens and support regional stability through diplomatic means.
According to the Foreign Ministry, Italy’s diplomatic network remains in constant contact with its representatives across the region.
