Blaise Metreweli, 47, is the new head of Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service, MI6. The appointment, announced on Sunday, June 15th, will see MI6 headed by a woman for the first time (the intelligence organisation’s 18th leader in its history).
Metreweli is moving up from her current role as head of technology (‘Q’) once the tenure of the current ‘C’ Richard Moore ends in the autumn of 2025. She has previously worked for the domestic security MI5—which itself has had a female boss on two separate occasions—and later oversaw operations in Europe and the Middle East.
While her appointment has surprised some—and been welcomed by PM Keir Starmer—it is unlikely to slow down the woke trajectory, shared with much of the British establishment, of the intelligence services.
