One man died and several other people were missing on Monday after a migrant boat capsized on a river at the Croatia-Bosnia border.
Police and rescue teams recovered one man from the water, but another was found dead, authorities reported. Emergency crews continued searching the river for several additional people who had been on board when the boat capsized.
Officials confirmed that the migrants were attempting to reach the European Union but did not disclose their nationalities. Croatia, an EU member, serves as a key transit country for illegal migrants crossing the Balkans toward Europe.
Meanwhile, in Libya, seven illegal migrants from sub-Saharan Africa were found dead on a beach east of Libya’s capital, Tripoli, according to a Libyan Red Crescent worker. Among the deceased were three children, and authorities suspect there may be more victims yet to be located. The circumstances of their deaths have not been disclosed.
According to EU border agency Frontex, over 12,500 people traveled along the Balkan route toward Europe in 2025. Since 2014, more than 400 people have been reported dead or missing on this route, data from the International Organization for Migration indicates.
