While Italy and Malta were able to launch a combined rescue effort, the dangers of the sea route from Libya to Europe remain undiminished.

At least 10 migrants drowned after their boat capsized in the Mediterranean on Sunday, June 7th.

According to the Italian coast guard, the boat left the Libyan coast with about 60 people on board before getting into difficulties near Malta. This prompted the Maltese authorities to request help, “following the capsizing of a vessel reported with migrants aboard and people in the water.”

While an Italian patrol boat recovered ten bodies, a local fishing vessel retrieved around 48 people survivors—with rescue operations continuing throughout the day.

The incident further adds to the death toll on a continually unsafe route for illegal migration.
