‘Fake news’ war content boosted the Iranian narrative, often by using old or AI-generated videos, report discovers.

Most online disinformation distributed during the Israel-Iran war in June 2025 supported Iran’s narrative. Researchers reviewed fact-checks from across 23 countries and found that 72% of the fake content favored Iran, while just 24% backed Israel.

A report by the Israel Internet Association found that most of the ‘fake news’ material was made from video clips—often old, taken from other, unrelated stories or shown with misleading captions. Some content was created using artificial intelligence (AI) or completely fabricated.

Common fake claims included reports of missile strikes, explosions and damaged infrastructure that never happened. Examples included old footage from China or Lebanon being passed off as new attacks.
