A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck Italy’s Campi Flegrei volcanic area at 12:07 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, sending tremors through Naples and prompting the evacuation of schools and universities. The quake, centered near the port of Pozzuoli at a depth of 3km, was followed by several aftershocks, the strongest reaching magnitude 3.5. No casualties or major damage have been reported, although a long-abandoned building in Pozzuoli collapsed.
Rail traffic across Naples was suspended as a precaution, disrupting high-speed and regional train services. Emergency inspections are underway at schools and key infrastructure. Hundreds of students were evacuated in Naples and on nearby Procida island, and archaeological sites in the area have been closed.
Authorities are urging calm and advising residents to follow only official updates. Local mayors have opened temporary shelters for those fearful of returning home, as seismic monitoring and civil protection efforts continue around the clock.
