On Wednesday, March 4th Turkey announced that a ballistic missile flying over the eastern Mediterranean Sea and heading toward its territory was intercepted and destroyed by NATO’s air defense system. The incident was confirmed by the Turkish Ministry of Defence.
The defence ministry revealed that, like the projectile itself, the interception caused no injuries or damage. Turkish authorities called for restraint, urging all actors to avoid steps that could further escalate tensions in the region:
We advise all parties to refrain from actions that will lead to further escalation of the conflict in the region. In this context, we will continue to consult with NATO and our other allies.
They were backed by NATO spokeswoman Allison Hart, who declared:
We condemn Iran’s targeting of Turkey. NATO stands firmly with all allies, including Turkey, as Iran continues its indiscriminate attacks across the region.
