Norway Edges Closer to Fully Electric Car Market

Electric vehicles accounted for 97.6% of December sales in the Scandinavian country.

Norway is getting closer to its goal of selling only zero-emission vehicles, with electric cars accounting for 95.9% of new registrations in 2025. Despite being a major oil exporter, the Scandinavian country continues to lead Europe’s transition to electric mobility.

According to the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV), a record number of 179,549 passenger cars were registered in 2025, surpassing the previous peak reached in 2021.

Electric vehicles accounted for 97.6% of December sales, boosted by a VAT exemption that will be reduced from NOK 500,000 to NOK 300,000 from 2026.

Tesla maintained its leading position with a 19.1% market share, while Chinese car manufacturers’ share increased from 10.4% to 13.7%.
