Germany registered a record-high 3.3 million asylum seekers residing in the country in 2024, an increase of 132,000—or 4.1%—compared to the previous year, according to the federal statistics office.
The largest group by nationality was Ukrainians, whose numbers rose by 12.5% to nearly 1.1 million. Syrians followed at 713,000 (+0.2%), then Afghans at 348,000 (+7.7%), and Turks at 157,000 (+3.7%).
The number of Iraqi asylum seekers declined by 5.2%, falling to around 190,000.
These five groups accounted for roughly 75% of all asylum seekers.
171,000 of the registered asylum seekers were obliged to leave the country because their asylum procedure had been rejected or they had lost their protection status.
The statistics signal Germany’s rapidly changing demographic landscape—and the ruling elites’ inability to control migration.
