The EU has presented a new proposal to overhaul the Union’s migrant relocation system in order to distribute the migration burden and assist member states on the external borders.
The distribution could take three forms: accepting relocated migrants, making a financial contribution, or providing technical assistance for border protection. The plan envisages the relocation of at least 30,000 people per year and a contribution of €600 million.
Member states would decide by majority vote, but if a country – for example Hungary – were to completely refuse to participate, an infringement procedure would be expected to be launched against it.
