Munich’s famous Oktoberfest will stay closed until at least 5 p.m. on Wednesday, October 1st. The decision follows the discovery of explosives in a northern residential building that had caught fire, killing one person. Police said the fire was deliberate, and special forces are now investigating.
Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) confirmed a “verified bomb threat” against the Oktoberfest. He said the threat came in a letter from the perpetrator, raising concerns about possible links to other locations in Munich, including the Theresienwiese.
Reports suggest the suspect may have rigged his parents’ home with explosives, set it on fire, and then died by suicide. Multiple burned-out vehicles, including cars and a minibus, were found nearby.
Police have cordoned off the Lerchenau area—close to the site of a recent violent robbery—and warned the public to avoid it, with major traffic disruptions expected.
