‘Europe’s Capital’ has seen an increase in shooting incidents in recent months.

Gunshots claimed one life at Place Louise in Brussels early on Saturday morning, the Brussels Capital-Ixelles police zone has confirmed.

The shooting occurred around 5:20, and police support arrived on the scene immediately after, drawing up a security perimeter. The victim was taken to hospital upon being discovered, writes the Brussels Times

The shooter’s motive remains unclear. “An investigation is ongoing to find out exactly what happened,” the Brussels police said.

The Brussels-Capital Region has seen an increased number of shooting incidents in recent months, with Anderlecht being the most vulnerable municipality.

Police have stepped up efforts to track down gang members involved in an ongoing drug war, yet violence persists in Brussels’ already notorious neighborhoods.
