Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán warned Europe of the growing risk of war, comparing the situation to the lead-up to the First World War.
Speaking on Hungarian public radio on Friday, October 31st, he said, “No one wanted a major war then, and the same risk stands before us now,” stressing Hungary must choose peace.
Viktor Orbán Western European leaders for openly advocating conflict with Russia. He emphasized that the situation has improved over the past year, primarily because the United States—through its president—now supports a ceasefire. “Today, only one great power wants peace: the USA,” he stated.
On Ukraine, Orbán opined that Europe is entering the spiral of a dangerous arms race, adding “Whoever supports Ukraine now, supports the war,” warning that EU funds for the war-torn country come from member states and continued financing of the conflict would strain taxpayers.
Peace talks between the U.S. and Russia in Budapest are still not off the table, although the summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in the Hungarian capital has been indefinitely delayed.
