Britain, Canada, Australia, and Portugal formally declared their recognition of a Palestinian state on Sunday, September 21st, increasing pressure on Israel as it fights its existential war against Hamas in Gaza.
President Macron said France will recognize a Palestinian state to support a two-state solution and isolate Hamas, while Germany, one of the few sober states in a West that is increasingly abandoning Israel, maintains it will not recognize Palestine until Israel and Palestine agree on a two-state solution.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated on Sunday, September 21st, his position that there would be no Palestinian state and vowed to accelerate the creation of new settlements.
A senior Hamas official welcomed the decision by Britain, Canada and Australia to recognize a Palestinian state, calling it “an important milestone resulting from the suffering of the Palestinian people.” Mahmoud Mardawi added that the recognition will lead to the establishment of a “sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.”
