Patriots Request Urgent European Parliament Session on Spain’s Migration Crisis

The Patriots for Europe Group has officially requested an urgent session of the European Parliament to address the escalating migration crisis at the EU’s external borders in the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. In a formal letter sent on July 31, 2026 to EP president Roberta Metsola, also published on X, Patriots president Jordan Bardella invoked Rule 160 of the Rules of Procedure that allows the president to “convene parliament on an exceptional basis.” 

In the letter, Bardella argues that the recent influx of migrants into the Spanish territories constitutes an exceptional situation that demands immediate parliamentary attention. He notes that the ongoing developments raise fundamental questions regarding the protection of the Union’s external borders, the management of illegal migration, and the security of European citizens. The group asserts that the current conditions for convening an urgent debate have been fully met, particularly in light of what they describe as the failure of the EU’s current migration policies.

To ensure a comprehensive debate, the Patriots group requested that Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, along with the Spanish ministers of the interior and foreign affairs, be invited to participate alongside representatives from the European Commission and the Council. Bardella called on other political groups within the European Parliament to join the initiative, requesting Metsola to consult with the Conference of Presidents (CoP) to schedule the session at the earliest opportunity.
