Poland is set to roll out an international information campaign aimed at discouraging migrants from attempting to enter the European Union via its border with Belarus, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Friday, April 4th.
Warsaw accuses Belarus and Russia of orchestrating a “hybrid operation” designed to increase migratory pressure on its eastern border, ultimately destabilizing the EU. Both countries deny these claims.
Last week, Poland suspended the right to seek asylum.
“We will soon launch an information campaign in seven countries where the largest number of migrants trying to illegally cross the Polish border come from,” Tusk stated on X. However, he did not specify which nations would be targeted.
Previously, in May, Tusk identified Somalia, Eritrea, Yemen, and Ethiopia as places where Russia allegedly recruits migrants, flying them to Moscow before directing them toward Belarus and, ultimately, Poland.
Poland’s message will be clear: “The Polish border is sealed. Do not believe the smugglers, do not believe Alexander Lukashenko, do not believe Vladimir Putin,” Tusk emphasized. “They are lying to you when they say that this is the way to Europe.”
To strengthen border security, the previous conservative Polish government constructed a five-meter metal fence along 186 kilometers of its border with Belarus in 2022, equipping it with surveillance cameras and motion sensors.
