Following a highly sensitive naming controversy, Poland’s president has stated he wants his Ukrainian counterpart stripped of the Order of the White Eagle.

Polish president Karol Nawrocki announced on Friday, May 29th that he wants Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky to be stripped of his country’s highest civilian award.

The diplomatic friction was sparked after Ukraine’s leader officially named a military unit after a historical faction that is widely accused of killing scores of Polish citizens during World War II.

Speaking to the press about the controversial decision, Nawrocki told the media that he was completely “outraged” by the move. In response to the geopolitical slight, he confirmed that he had formally proposed

the withdrawal of the Order of the White Eagle from President Zelensky.
