Poland’s Supreme Court affirmed on Tuesday, July 1st the validity of last month’s presidential election, confirming the victory of conservative candidate Karol Nawrocki.
The decision brings to a close a wave of electoral complaints and attempts by the losing side, led by liberal Prime Minister Donald Tusk, to question the legitimacy of Nawrocki’s victory.
In its ruling, the court addressed 56,000 formal appeals challenging vote tallies and alleged irregularities. Just 21 were found to have merit, but none were deemed substantial enough to undermine the overall outcome.
Karol Nawrocki, a conservative historian endorsed by the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, garnered approximately 51% in the June 1 runoff, defeating his Europhile rival Rafał Trzaskowski, the Mayor of Warsaw.
PiS had dismissed doubts about the vote as an attempt to “steal the election.”
The court’s validation clears the way for his inauguration, expected on August 6th.
