Poland’s governing coalition has announced a major political reset and cabinet reshuffle following the defeat of its presidential candidate Rafał Trzaskowski—although lower-house Speaker Szymon Hołownia denied the election loss was the reason. “This is not a reaction to Nawrocki’s victory; it’s a statement of responsibility for Poland,” he said. “We know what we want to change and how to fix it.”

On Thursday, June 5th, Prime Minister Tusk met for the first time since the defeat with key figures from his coalition. The discussions lasted nearly two hours and resulted in what Hołownia, the Speaker of the Sejm and leader of Polska 2050, described as “concrete decisions” about the coalition’s path forward.

“We’ve taken concrete decisions about how our cooperation will look in the weeks and months ahead,” Hołownia told reporters, describing the talks as part of “a very important process” meant to show voters that the government is learning from its campaign mistakes and committed to serious reform. He said the coalition was entering “the beginning of a new opening.”

The political reset comes just days before the government’s June 11th vote of confidence in parliament. Tusk initially announced the motion shortly after Trzaskowski’s defeat, framing it as a test of the coalition’s resilience under mounting pressure from the victorious Nawrocki and the reinvigorated PiS. While originally slated for this week, the vote was pushed to Tuesday at Hołownia’s request, giving coalition members time to “calm emotions and come back with a clear plan.”
