Forty-three percent of Spain’s conservative People’s Party (PP) voters view Francisco Franco’s era positively, according to a new Target Point poll for El Debate. Among supporters of the right-wing VOX party, 55 percent say the Franco period was good or very good for Spain, while a separate question finds 43 percent hold a positive personal image of Franco himself.
The survey shows clear political divisions. Most PP voters take a favourable or neutral view of the era, while large majorities of PSOE, Sumar and Podemos supporters rate it negatively. Nationally, 51.5 percent describe the period as bad for Spain and 22 percent as good, with younger and older respondents the most likely to give strong opinions.
On Franco’s personal image, around one in five Spaniards describe it as “regular”, and more than 15 percent view it positively.
The poll appears amid a government programme of anniversary events marking 50 years since Franco’s death and Spain’s political transition.
