Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Thursday that he would speak with U.S. President Donald Trump in a phone call later that day—their first publicly confirmed conversation in over two weeks.
The two leaders have maintained regular contact since Trump took office in January, frequently discussing key issues such as the conflict in Ukraine and economic cooperation. Speaking at an exhibition center in Moscow, Putin told reporters, “I will talk to the U.S. president today,” though he did not specify the agenda for the call.
Trump confirmed the scheduled conversation on his social media platform, Truth Social, noting that it would begin at 10:00 a.m. (1400 GMT). Despite Russia’s ongoing military assault on Ukraine, both leaders have recently exchanged warm remarks.
Last week, Putin expressed “great respect” for Trump, stating that relations between the two countries were improving, to which Trump responded by calling Putin’s words “very nice.”
