The number of recorded crimes in Regensburg, Bavaria, has declined, but new police data highlights a notable trend regarding the background of suspects.

According to the latest data released by the local police, 13,056 cases were registered in the city of around 150,000 residents—approximately 1,900 fewer than the previous year. At the same time, the clearance rate rose by 3.1% points to 67%.

Apart from the overall drop in crime, it is noteworthy that 45.5% of the 5,449 identified suspects did not hold German citizenship, which means non-German nationals are conspicuously overrepresented among offenders, given that according to 2022 data, they constitute roughly 11% of Regensburg’s population. Among them, Tunisian nationals accounted for 5.9% of all suspects.

The most common offences last year were theft-related crimes, making up 38.1% of cases, followed by other offences at 22.1%. Sexual offences increased by 16.8% to 333 cases. The number of reported rapes reached 49, with a clearance rate of 87%.

Meanwhile, according to the German Federal Ministry of the Interior, 74,089 out of 113,236 first-time asylum applicants over the age of 18 last year had no identity documents—representing 65.4%. This marks the highest proportion recorded to date, compared to 49.9% the previous year.
