German authorities have arrested a Ukrainian man and a Latvian man on suspicion of planning acts of sabotage for a foreign organisation after a routine traffic stop in Bavaria, prosecutors said.
The two suspects, aged 43 and 45, were detained after their vehicle, bearing a Latvian licence plate, was stopped on a motorway near Nuremberg on April 12th. Police said “suspicious” items were discovered inside the car, including fake identity documents, cameras, a drone, GPS trackers, mobile phones and several SIM cards.
Authorities said they are currently operating on the assumption that the individuals were acting on behalf of a group or organisation outside Germany, although no further details were provided about possible links or motives. The men’s identities have not been disclosed, and both have been remanded in custody.
They face potential charges related to preparing sabotage for a foreign power, which carries a maximum prison sentence of up to five years if convicted. They are also under investigation for alleged falsification of identity documents, an offence punishable by up to two years in prison.
