Diplomatic sources claim that Russia assisted India in preventing Azerbaijan from joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in September, reports emerged that India had vetoed Azerbaijan’s membership. Simultaneously, Pakistan  blocked Armenia’s bid—despite the recent establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The claims were made by diplomatic sources, according to Azerbaijani media.

Azerbaijan’s attempt to join the SCO has sparked tensions, with reports saying that Russia may have blocked it despite China’s support. In diplomatic circles and beyond, this could be interpreted as a sign of disrespect toward Beijing.

The dispute comes amid worsening Azerbaijan-Russia relations, following a deadly plane crash blamed on Russian air defense and the killing of two Azerbaijanis by Russian police.
