According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, both sides agreed to act responsibly and begin nuclear negotiations as soon as possible.

Russia and the United States have agreed on the necessity of renewing nuclear negotiations, the Kremlin announced Friday, following the expiration of the New START treaty, the most recent agreement between Moscow and Washington limiting their nuclear arsenals.

The decision came after two days of high-level talks in Abu Dhabi focused on resolving the Ukraine conflict. During the meetings, both sides expressed understanding and emphasized acting responsibly, with an agreement to begin negotiations on nuclear issues as soon as possible, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

The expiration of New START on Thursday, February 5th sparked concerns over a potential global arms race. U.S. president Donald Trump’s administration had repeatedly criticized the treaty as “badly negotiated” and argued for a modernized agreement, insisting that future talks also include China, whose nuclear arsenal is growing.
