The Russian embassy in Romania stated that a specific drone’s entry into Romanian airspace was a “provocation” by Ukraine, following the summoning of Moscow’s envoy by the foreign ministry over the incident.
Ambassador Vladimir Lipayev dismissed Romania’s accusation that Russia was behind the intrusion, calling it “unfounded.”
In a statement issued late Sunday, the embassy declared: “All the facts lead one to believe that it was a deliberate provocation by the Kyiv regime,” adding that Bucharest had failed to “concretely and convincingly respond” to Russia’s questions.
Since the start of the Russia–Ukraine war in February 2022, several drone fragments have landed on Romanian territory, particularly as attacks on Ukrainian ports have intensified.
Romania reported late Saturday that its airspace had been breached by a Russian drone. It scrambled two F-16 fighter jets, which “detected a drone in national airspace” and tracked it until it dropped off the radar, the defence ministry said.
Romania strongly condemned the breach of its airspace by a Russian drone during an attack on neighbouring Ukraine.
The defence ministry reported that the drone remained in Romanian skies for roughly 50 minutes, moving between Chilia Veche and Izmail before exiting near Pardina back toward Ukraine.
While Romanian pilots were authorised to shoot it down, they refrained due to the potential risks involved.
