Border crossing points on Russia’s border with Finland are scheduled to be closed from Wednesday, July 1st by the Russian administration. This follows Tuesday’s order for several rail border crossings to be temporarily closed, all on the borders with Estonia, Finland, and Latvia.
The order will impact the movement of cargo, goods, people, and vehicles.
The Enso, Lyttä, and Värtsilä border crossings, among others were set for closure. Finland learned of the decision through such Russian state news agencies Tass and Ria Novosti. Formal notifications of the decision from Moscow’s Foreign Ministry are expected eventually.
Various border crossing points between Finland and Russia have been closed since December 2023, with an exception for trains through the Vainikkala border station. Tensions between the two countries may have further increased when Finland’s parliament voted to make the stationing of nuclear arms in the Nordic country into a realistic possibility.
