Key negotiators from Washington and Kyiv convened at the weekend—but Moscow’s absence would always limit any progress.

With the global focus on the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. officials met with their Ukrainian counterparts in another bid to revive the peace process.

Discussions involving Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner “aim to understand Russia’s willingness to end the war,” according to reports. As President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine put it,

The most important thing is to understand to what extent the Russian side is ready to move towards a genuine end to the war.

Previous meetings in Geneva in February proved fruitless. Security council secretary Rustem Umerov and key Zelensky aide Lieutenant-General Kyrylo Budanov—representing Ukraine in Florida on Saturday, March 21st—were hoping for a more concrete result this time.
