Russia fired 40 missiles and around 580 drones at Ukraine in one of the largest attacks in weeks, killing at least three people and wounding dozens, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday.
Overnight strikes hit multiple regions, including the eastern city of Dnipro, where a missile carrying cluster munitions struck an apartment building, killing one and injuring 26, local officials said. A second fatality was reported in northern Chernigiv, and a third in the Khmelnytskyi region after residential buildings were damaged.
Ukraine declared a nationwide air alert as explosions were reported near Kyiv and across several regions.
Moscow claimed its forces intercepted 149 Ukrainian drones over Russia’s Volgograd, Rostov, and Saratov regions, accusing Kyiv of “massive” overnight attacks.
The escalation comes as peace efforts have stalled despite recent meetings between US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Zelensky. Tensions in the region rose further on Friday after Estonia accused Russia of violating its airspace, prompting NATO allies to reinforce air patrols on the alliance’s eastern flank.
