Widespread UAV and missile strikes add to Ukraine’s civilian death toll, despite its air defence systems intercepting 642 of the incoming weapons.

At least 22 people died across Ukraine as the result of a major overnight drone and missile assault launched by Moscow, it was confirmed on Tuesday June 2nd. Initial reports indicated 13 deaths.

Six were killed in Dnipro, with four fatalities—to date—in Kyiv. Dozens of injuries were reported from the capital caused by Russian projectiles hitting apartment blocks. Air-raid sirens were in continuous use throughout early Tuesday morning and Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to stay in shelters.

In Kharkiv, 10 people including a child were reported injured in overnight UAV and missile strikes. An industrial facility was also attacked in Zaporizhzhia.

Russia’s Defence Ministry presented its attacks as a defensive response to Ukrainian ‘terrorism’ focused on military targets:

Overnight, in response to terrorist acts of the Kyiv regime, the armed forces of the Russian Federation carried out a massive strike using high-precision long-range air-, land-, and sea-based weapons.

Reports yesterday established that May 2026 had the largest total number of Russian drones so far launched into Ukrainian territory, with an estimated 9% evading air defence systems.
