Rescue teams search rubble after a Russian strike hits a residential block in eastern Ukraine, as calls grow for stronger Western support.

A Russian strike on a residential building in the eastern Ukrainian city of Dnipro killed at least two people and injured 21, with several others still missing, local authorities said on Saturday.

Rescue teams recovered two bodies from the rubble of the destroyed building, according to regional official Oleksandr Ganzha. He added that five people are believed to remain trapped beneath the debris.

Footage shared by authorities showed emergency workers pulling a body in a black bag from the ruins as heavy machinery cleared wreckage from the site.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the broader wave of overnight Russian strikes across the country had left four people dead and around 30 wounded.

“Every such strike should serve as a reminder to our partners that the situation requires immediate and firm action,” Zelensky said, calling for stronger air defence support and further sanctions against Russia.

The European Union this week approved its 20th sanctions package targeting Russia’s banking sector and oil exports. After months of delay, member states also agreed to a €90 billion loan package to support Ukraine’s defence and public spending through 2026-2027.

Civilian areas in Ukraine have been repeatedly hit since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, with near-daily reports of casualties.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian drone strikes injured one person in Russia’s Kursk region, which borders Ukraine, according to regional authorities.

Efforts to reach a ceasefire remain stalled, with U.S.-led mediation overshadowed by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
