Police are not treating the incident as terror-related, they said on Thursday.

A 21-year-old Saudi national, a former student at the University of Surrey, was arrested on Thursday after allegedly using a crossbow to shoot a man on campus.

The incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. at Manor Park Student Village in Guildford. The victim, a man in his 50s who worked for the university’s campus safety team, suffered serious, life-threatening injuries. He was airlifted to a major London hospital for treatment.

Surrey Police said the suspect was detained at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder. Officers confirmed they are not treating the incident as terror-related. A student reportedly helped restrain the suspect until police arrived.

The University of Surrey remains open and is assisting the investigation. Police have appealed for witnesses and are continuing to establish the full circumstances of the attack.

Chief Superintendent Jon Groenen of the Surrey Police said, “I appreciate that this incident will cause concern amongst our local communities, and I can reassure that we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident. We are working closely with the university as our investigation progresses.”
