The minority government of Saxony, led by Minister-President Michael Kretschmer (CDU), has enacted a new code of conduct designed to ensure the constitutional loyalty of the state’s public workforce.
Following the Saxony intelligence agency’s classification of the local chapter of Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) as “confirmed right-wing extremist,” the regional interior ministry is mandating heightened scrutiny for civil servants and public employees who maintain ties to the party.
While the guidelines clarify that mere party membership is not sufficient grounds for dismissal, they establish a low threshold for investigations.
Disciplinary action—ranging from reprimands to termination—can now be triggered by systematic recruitment, agitation, or public support on social media.
Furthermore, the document encourages superiors to follow up on tips from third parties, including reports from colleagues, and allows for the use of press photos from demonstrations as evidence.
Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) maintains that these measures are essential to identify an internal abandonment of democratic principles.
