Authorities in the southern Holosiivskyi district of the Ukrainian capital have confirmed six deaths following a major firearms incident on Saturday, April 18th.

According to initial reports, a local man—described as “acting chaotically”—began shooting at bypassers on the street, initially killing four and injuring at least 14, before taking hostages in a nearby shop. After 40 minutes of negotiations, the first hostage was executed, prompting police to kill the shooter.

Four hostages were then freed, but by then four people were confirmed to have been killed on the street; later a female fifth victim died in hospital. Among the 14 people known to have been injured was a 12-year-old boy whose parents perished in the initial incident.

Local media named the perpetrator as Dmytro Vasylchenkov, a Ukrainian citizen born in Moscow. A longtime resident of Bakhmut in the eastern Donetsk region with a criminal record, Vasylchenkov’s most recent actions drew comment from President Volodymyr Zelensky:

All available information about [the attacker] and the motives behind his actions is being thoroughly investigated. Every detail must be verified.

Non-military mass casualty attacks are rare in Ukraine, against the backdrop of an ongoing war with Russia. Despite online speculation, it remains to be seen whether the conflict with Moscow played any role in Saturday’s tragedy in Holosiivskyi.
